The First Communion plays an important role in the life of every Catholic child. The communion involves a tradition in which parish members give consecrated bread and wine which is believed to be the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Children usually receive it at the age of 7, and the event is earmarked by the family gathering and gifts after the celebrations are over. Wearing a proper dress attire shows respect towards the church. In the below- mentioned lines, we have written about the communion dress etiquette that a girl child should follow:
Dress or outfit The young girls who are receiving the First communion should wear a white or ivory dress. White is a sign of respect and modesty. The white communion dress should not be too small; it should fall below the knee length or at least the calf length. This dress can be simple or embellished as per the child, church and community preference. One should not mistake this event as a conservative one; it is a way to show the reverence to the Church. Holy communion accessories There are certain accessories that fall under the mandatory category which includes communion veil. The veil can be combined with other hair accessories like tiara, depending upon the preference of your child. Alternatively, you can also ask for a white headband, a white barrette, white ribbon and floral crown. Girls may even couple up their dress with knee socks, stockings and white shoes. But all these are optional. Communion veil is only mandatory but there are some churches that allow the child to come to an event without the veil. It actually depends upon the church to church, so you should ask the local church representative or a parish. Keep your tone conservative As it is a spiritual event, so it is important to keep the tone subtle and conservative. Although some dressmakers promote sleeveless dress as perfect of the occasion but most parishes frown upon it and it is better to keep make-up at a bay. The gloves are permitted by some churches and some other frown upon it, so it is better to ask the parish before adding accessories to communion outfit. Dress that parents should wear The parents and family members of a child who are attending the First holy communion should wear clothes that they would typically wear on mass ceremony. They are not required to wear any specific color code. They just need to observe a modest dress sense as it reflects respect towards the church. The parents should also avoid wearing a strapless dress, short skirts and low neck clothes. Last but not least; holy communion is a spiritual event, so the focus should remain on what the event is all about rather than dress and shoes. They are part of it but the main occasion is to teach your child about faith challenges and how to obey the commands lay down by God.
